Key trends for the month include a 14.8% year-on-year decrease in production in oxygen converters, dropping to 2.06 million tons, while this figure increased by 12.1% compared to the previous month. In electric arc furnaces, production was 1.05 million tons, which is 3.5% less than in March 2024 but 21.8% more compared to February.
Iron production in March decreased by 15% compared to last year, but increased by 10.9% compared to January of this year, totaling 1.89 million tons. Hot-rolled steel production for the month decreased by 7.3% year-on-year but increased by 17.7% month-on-month, reaching 2.79 million tons.
Production Figures for January-March 2025
In the first three months of the year, steel production in Germany decreased by 12.5% compared to the same period last year, totaling 8.49 million tons. In oxygen converters, 5.75 million tons of steel were produced, which is 15.1% less than in January-March 2024. In electric arc furnaces, production was 2.74 million tons, a decrease of 6.4%. Iron production over the three months fell by 15.7% to 5.32 million tons, while rolled steel production decreased by 10.9% to 7.64 million tons.
Reports indicate that although the country increased its total steel production by 5.2% in 2024 compared to 2023, production volumes still remain below the 40 million ton level, which would indicate signs of recession, notes WVStahl. At the same time, the country continues to rank among the top ten steel producers in the world.
