Ukrainian Electricity Prices Higher than European Due to Russian Shelling

Українські ціни на електроенергію є одними з найвищих в Європі.

According to research by GMK Center, in the first two weeks of April, electricity prices in Ukraine exceeded those in neighboring countries such as Poland, Romania, Hungary, and Slovakia. It is noted that the price in our country is 34% higher than in Germany and 250% higher compared to Sweden. This is due to significant damage to Ukraine’s energy infrastructure as a result of Russian shelling.

Currently, domestic electricity prices are determined by the cost of imported energy. The weighted average price of electricity trading on the day-ahead market (DAM) in the first decade of April was €104.6 (₴4,834) per MWh. In most European markets during this period, prices were below €75 per MWh.

Electricity Imports and Comparison with Europe

In March 2025, Ukraine imported 272,000 MWh of electricity, which is 11% more than in the previous month but 40% less than in March 2024. The largest share of imports came from Hungary — 42%. At the same time, it should be noted that 93% of electricity in the European Union is produced in countries where electricity prices are lower than in Ukraine.

“Significant damage to Ukraine’s energy infrastructure as a result of Russian shelling has a substantial impact on the formation of electricity prices in the country,” experts comment.
