Hydnum Steel Secures €60 Million for Green Steel Plant Construction in Spain

Hydnum Steel получит €60 млн на строительство завода «зеленой» стали на Пиренеях

Spanish metal manufacturer Hydnum Steel (HS) will receive €60 million in investments to build the first “green” steel plant in the Pyrenees. This project is being implemented under the PERTE program, supported by the European recovery plan – Next Generation EU. The new facility is planned to be located in the city of Puertollano, in the Castilla-La Mancha region.

Project Features and Strategy

The plant will operate on renewable energy and will gradually transition to using “green” hydrogen as fuel. This will significantly reduce CO2 emissions in production. The plan is for the annual production volume to be around 1.5 million tons of flat steel for the automotive, construction, and energy sectors.

Support and Implementation Prospects

The project is receiving strong support from regional authorities, which have granted it priority status, and it is currently in the process of obtaining “project of special interest” status, which will expedite its implementation. Participation in this project is also confirmed by international support: the World Economic Forum has included the plant among the top five initiatives in the world for industrial decarbonization.

“Hydnum Steel will be the first “green” metallurgical plant in Spain capable of producing steel products with a significant reduction in carbon emissions,” the company stated in a press release.

According to reports, in January 2025, Hydnum Steel signed a contract worth approximately €1 billion with the Spanish multinational company Gonvarri Industries. This agreement includes the supply of “green” steel for the first seven years of the plant’s operation, marking an important step towards the decarbonization of the country’s metallurgical sector.
