UN Records Historic Rise in Global Meat Prices

ООН зафіксувала рекордне подорожчання одного з базових продуктів.

The global food price index, calculated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), stood at 128.8 points in September 2025. This is a 0.7% decrease compared to August. The increase in meat prices offset the decline in prices for grains, dairy products, sugar, and vegetable oils. Compared to September 2024, the FAO index rose by 3.4%, but it remains 19.6% lower than the record level of March 2022, which was recorded after the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Global Meat Prices Set New Record

In September, the FAO meat price index reached 127.8 points, which is 0.7% higher than the August figure and 6.6% more than a year ago. Thus, the cost of meat has reached an all-time high. The main factors contributing to this increase were the rise in global beef and lamb prices, while prices for pork and poultry remained stable.

Price Dynamics of Dairy Products, Vegetable Oils, and Sugar

The dairy price index in September was 148.3 points, which is 2.6% lower compared to August, yet it remains 9% higher than a year earlier. The FAO vegetable oil price index decreased by 0.7% to 167.9 points, while this figure is nearly 18% above the level of September 2024.

According to FAO data, the price of sugar in September fell by 4.1% compared to August and by 21.3% year-on-year, reaching 99.4 points. Thus, the sugar price has become the lowest since March 2021.

The FAO price index was 3.4% higher than the level of September 2024, but remained 19.6% lower than the peak in March 2022, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
