Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko has officially submitted a request to the International Monetary Fund for the establishment of a new credit program. The relevant letter was handed over to the head of the IMF mission, Gavin Gray, during a meeting on September 9. The aim of the new program is to provide support to Ukraine over the next few years amid the prolonged state of war.

“I handed the head of the IMF mission, Gavin Gray, a letter requesting a new cooperation program that should support Ukraine over the next few years. We agreed to continue the necessary consultations between our teams in the coming months to achieve a positive decision from the IMF Board of Directors by the end of the year,” the government leader noted after the negotiations.

Focus of the new cooperation with the IMF

The current cooperation program with the IMF is set to last until 2027; however, according to the head of the National Bank, Andriy Pyshny, it is primarily focused on post-war reconstruction issues. As hostilities continue, Ukraine’s next state budget will remain military-oriented, with the main priorities for 2026 being the financing of the defense sector and social programs. To this end, the government is seeking both domestic sources and additional international financial support.

Support for private business and energy

In addition to the main issue of the new program, discussions also covered topics related to attracting capital for the development of the private sector, deregulation, and the restoration of energy infrastructure. Svyrydenko emphasized that these areas are crucial for sustainable economic growth in Ukraine under current conditions.
