The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), established at the White House following Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential elections, has effectively ceased to exist. Although the official term of DOGE’s authority expires in July 2026, a significant portion of the department’s staff has already been transferred to new positions in various government agencies.

Reasons for the Disbandment and Restructuring in DOGE
The department was founded with the aim of optimizing federal spending, initially led by the well-known entrepreneur Elon Musk. However, at the end of May 2025, Musk announced his exit from politics, which triggered personnel and organizational changes within DOGE. Following this, disagreements arose between Musk and Trump, and Musk even initiated the creation of his own political party aimed at changing the government structure.
The activities of DOGE were accompanied by a wave of resignations, criticism regarding the lack of transparent reporting, and questionable effectiveness. This further propelled the disbandment of the agency and the transfer of its functions to other government structures.
“DOGE effectively no longer exists and has ceased to be a centralized structure,” noted Scott Cooper, head of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM).
New Roles for Employees and the Future of DOGE
The key functions of DOGE have been transferred to OPM, and some former team members have received new appointments. In particular, Joseph Gebbia Jr., designer and co-founder of Airbnb, has been appointed head of the National Design Studio to update government web resources. Personnel changes have also affected Zachary Terrell, Rachel Riley, and Jeremy Levin, who continue to work on reducing government spending, but now in different departments.
Despite the fact that under Trump’s directive DOGE’s authority was supposed to conclude only in July 2026, government officials are already acting as if the organization has been disbanded. Furthermore, the lifting of the hiring moratorium in the public sector, which had been in place since January 2025, has been confirmed.
The official DOGE website continues to operate; however, the latest publications on it are dated August 2025. At the same time, new posts occasionally appear on the Department’s page on the social network X (formerly Twitter). Elon Musk and the DOGE team have yet to comment on the situation regarding the effective disbandment of the agency.
