The President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, has signed a law that regulates the further status of Ukrainian citizens residing in the country. The document, known as the Law on Assistance to Citizens of Ukraine, extends the legal stay of Ukrainians in Poland until March 4, 2026. According to the head of the president’s office, Zbigniew Bogucki, this is the last such initiative within the framework of special support for Ukrainians.

New Conditions for Ukrainians in Poland
From now on, the right to receive social benefits for Ukrainian refugees in Poland will be linked to the fulfillment of certain conditions, including employment or enrollment of children in Polish educational institutions. With the adoption of this law, the Polish authorities intend to gradually transition to standard conditions for citizens of other countries residing in the republic. According to recent data, approximately 1.5 million Ukrainian citizens currently live in Poland.
As noted by the head of the president’s office, Zbigniew Bogucki, this law is the “last” in the framework of special assistance to Ukrainians.
EU Plan for Ending Temporary Protection
At the same time, the European Union has developed a plan for the phased end of temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees. According to the new proposals, temporary protection in EU countries will be in effect until March 4, 2027. Following that, two main scenarios are provided for Ukrainians: obtaining national residence permits in the respective countries or gradual and voluntary return to their homeland. Special arrangements will be made for Ukrainians with children and for individuals with special needs. To ensure that refugees are informed, it is planned to create special centers called Unity Hubs in the EU.
