Finland has proposed to introduce tariffs on all imports from Russia to the European Union, which will operate alongside existing sanctions. This move does not require unanimity from all EU member states. This decision comes at a time when the Union is facing new challenges, as Hungary opposes the extension of previously imposed sanctions against Russia.

Strengthening EU Sanctions
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that in the event of Russia’s refusal to agree to a 30-day ceasefire, the majority of EU members and representatives of the “coalition of the willing” are ready to impose even stricter sanctions against Moscow.
At the same time, the United Kingdom announced the largest sanctions package in history, concerning 100 oil tankers from Russia’s shadow fleet, which have transported cargo worth over 24 billion US dollars since the beginning of 2024.
Calls for a Peaceful Resolution of the Conflict
US President Donald Trump, after a conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, called on Russia for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire. He noted that if this is not adhered to, the US and its partners will impose new sanctions.
Head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell indicated that the new EU sanctions package could be approved as early as the end of May.
