The Commercial Court of Donetsk Oblast has ruled that the Russian Federation must compensate the company “Metro Cash and Carry Ukraine” over 377 million UAH. This payment is designated for the loss of movable and immovable property due to the occupation of Mariupol, where the METRO shopping center was located.

Compensation for property damages and lost profits
Of the total compensation amount, 114.9 million UAH represents direct losses — this includes lost property, equipment, and goods of the retailer. An additional 262.7 million UAH accounts for lost profits that the company could not realize due to the cessation of operations at the shopping center following the occupation.
“The court ruled that the armed aggression of the Russian Federation deprived the retailer of the ability to use its property, and the seizure of the shopping center constitutes a violation of international law and the Constitution of Ukraine.”
Legal consequences and new losses for Ukrainian companies
This court decision allows METRO to officially confirm to its suppliers that the losses of goods occurred specifically due to the armed aggression of Russia, and not due to any fault of the company itself. Furthermore, the ruling opens the possibility for further recovery of damages from Russian assets abroad.
At the same time, the “Cheese Kingdom” store chain reported the loss of its office in Kyiv following a combined attack by Russia on the capital on June 23. As a result of the strike, all servers containing databases and documents were destroyed, and the office was completely burned down. Despite this, the chain continues to operate, and dozens of stores remain open to visitors.
