Ukrzaliznytsia Plans to Write Off 60,000 Freight Cars to Support Metallurgy and Update Rolling Stock

"Укрзалізниця" готується списати 60 000 вагонів, щоб підтримати вітчизняну металургію та оновити рухомий склад.

The future plans of “Ukrzaliznytsia” involve writing off up to 60,000 freight cars to support the domestic metallurgy sector and update the rolling stock. These measures are crucial for preserving and developing the Ukrainian metallurgy sector, as well as enhancing the efficiency of the railway company.

Discussion on the Need to Update Rolling Stock

At the conference “Ukrainian Ferrous Metallurgy 2025,” the top manager of “Ukrzaliznytsia,” Valerii Tkachov, stated:

“We are in dire need of new cars, locomotives, and investments in infrastructure. Unfortunately, we currently lack sufficient funding.”

He added that the company has appealed to the Ministry of Development to cancel existing orders that complicate the write-off of outdated rolling stock. If the relevant changes are adopted, the company will be able to send up to 60,000 cars for scrap, allowing the recovered metal to be used as raw material for Ukrainian metallurgy. The proceeds are planned to be directed towards the purchase of new cars, which will enhance the efficiency of transportation and ensure the stability of the sector.

Ministry of Infrastructure Simplifies Procedures for Selling Ukrzaliznytsia’s Assets

Recently, the Ukrainian government simplified the procedures for managing assets for “Ukrzaliznytsia.” Now, the company can independently sell assets valued at up to 500 million hryvnias. This allows the domestic market to realize over 218,000 tons of scrap ferrous metals worth approximately 1.6 billion hryvnias, as well as 3,800 tons of scrap non-ferrous metals and alloys worth over 233 million hryvnias.
