OPEC+ Increases Oil Production Due to US Pressure and Threat of Tariffs on Russian Oil

Ціни на російську нафту впали до мінімуму за два роки й вже на 40% менші за закладені у бюджет. Економіка РФ вперше з 2022 року демонструє падіння.

The OPEC+ countries have decided to increase oil production in September 2025 by 547,000 barrels per day. This move is driven by rising risks of supply disruptions from Russia and increasing external pressure on the market.

OPEC+ Decision and the Role of the US

For several years, OPEC+ has adhered to a policy of production cuts to stabilize oil prices. However, in 2025, the organization changed its approach, aiming to regain market share. The increase in production was a response to calls from US President Donald Trump, who insisted on boosting supply, as well as threats to impose 100% tariffs on countries purchasing Russian oil. Trump expressed this position in the event that Moscow did not agree to a peace deal with Ukraine.

Impact on the Oil Market

Following the announcement of the production increase, Brent crude oil futures fell by $0.4 on August 4, reaching $69.27 per barrel. The price of American WTI crude dropped by $0.37 to $66.96 per barrel. By the end of Friday, both major oil benchmarks had decreased by approximately $2.

“The group of oil-exporting countries made this decision amid increasing US pressure on India to halt purchases of Russian oil.”

The increase in production also entails a rise in quotas for the United Arab Emirates, creating additional opportunities for regional oil exporters.
