Ukraine’s Population Has Decreased to 1920s Levels — 30.5 Million Remain in Controlled Territories

Населення України з урахуванням тимчасово окупованих територій скоротилося до рівня 1920-х років; на підконтрольних територіях залишилось 30,5 млн людей.

Analysts conducted a comprehensive study of Ukraine’s population, using four independent methodologies, with the primary one being the analysis of water consumption levels. As a result, experts concluded that within the internationally recognized borders of Ukraine, there are currently between 35 and 35.5 million residents. This figure is close to the numbers recorded in the 1920s and is only 2 million higher than the population count after the end of World War II.

Population Dynamics in Ukraine Over Recent Decades

The last official population census in Ukraine was conducted in 2001, when 48.46 million residents were recorded. However, as of December 1, 2019, excluding the temporarily occupied territories of Donbas and Crimea, the population had already reached 37.29 million. The census planned for 2023 using modern technologies did not take place due to the onset of full-scale war.

Population Estimation — A Current Demand from Society

The State Statistics Service announced its intention to conduct a calculated estimate of Ukraine’s population by the end of this year. This procedure will not serve as a full replacement for the traditional census, but at this moment, it is the most optimal solution for obtaining current information. According to the head of the State Statistics Service, the demand for reliable data regarding the population remains one of the most pressing issues — from both state authorities and local governments, as well as from businesses and citizens.

“The total population within internationally recognized borders is 35-35.5 million. This is close to the number of people who lived in this territory in the 1920s and only 2 million more than after World War II,” experts note.
