U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed his willingness to sign a bill regarding new sanctions against the Russian Federation, provided that amendments are made to the document that grant him greater control over the process of lifting them. Trump insists that the president should have broader powers regarding the removal of sanctions, including the ability to cancel harsh tariffs on imports of Russian oil and uranium.

New Rules for Sanction Control
The current version of the bill stipulates that the president can temporarily suspend a 500% tariff for countries purchasing Russian energy resources for up to 180 days. At the same time, the bill’s sponsor, Senator Lindsey Graham, has agreed to revise the document to allow for the possibility of lifting sanctions again, but only under Congressional oversight.
“The administration will not be subject to micromanagement by Congress regarding the president’s foreign policy.”
Flexibility in Foreign Policy and the White House’s Position
The White House emphasizes that expanding presidential powers regarding sanctions provides flexibility for reaching potential agreements with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. At the same time, according to information from the administration, Trump’s willingness to work with Congress indicates his growing frustration with Putin. It is noted that Trump, known for his “reputation as a dealmaker who can negotiate anything, anywhere,” is currently feeling pressure due to the actions of the Russian dictator that have undermined his position.
The U.S. Senate is considering the possibility of bringing the sanctions bill against Russia to discussion before the end of the current month. It is worth noting that starting August 1, the Senate plans to begin a month-long recess in its work.
